Sinus medication sucks for thinking capacity, btw.
So, I have 2 resumes.
One is the normal - list job/title/responsibilities/education - the other is a professional skills resume.
Basically it lists what I've done, my skills that I have (like well versed in GCP compliance, data monitoring, blah blah blah) and then just lists the jobs/titles I've held without really associating a job with a skill (if that makes sense) - the reason I have this one is because its shorter. My first resume is like 3 pages long.
Do you think I could use the prof. skills one to apply to jobs? There's that whole DON'T HAVE YOUR RESUME BE TOO LONG - thing, and that's what I'm worried about.
Also, if anyone wants to see them I'll email them out.
I just know you're supposed to talk yourself up in resumes, and that second one is the only one I can really do that in... _________________

I'll take a look
most of my one internship was recruiting people for entry-level IT jobs. and that mostly involved pulling people who used to mop floors and writing fake resumes to pass along to our prime contractor. so I've read and written a ton of resumes...
what I saw a lot of people doing when they got more jobs listed was putting a couple of their older ones down with title only, and giving detail on only the past 2-3. _________________ I live my life like I could die today, and want to make sure my toxocology report is an interesting read. |

I'll send them -
I just sent both to my FDA friend -
I was cruising the USA Jobs website and it seems like they want you to create your resume through them, using more of the professional skills format.
What's interesting/sucks about my jobs are that the past 3 I've had are very relevant - I've worked with medical records, source data, and then data monitoring, all at different places, so I need to establish that "history" if you will - mostly so they can give me years more of experience and more money. _________________

haha USA Jobs is what I used to use for recruiting! dude be careful, their website is super budget. people always tried to copy/paste bulleted stuff from Word into there and would get all these weird symbols out of it. formatting would get super broken.
should I PM you my email or you got that? _________________ I live my life like I could die today, and want to make sure my toxocology report is an interesting read. |

I have it - you should have something in your gmail already.
Yes, it is budget. I learned long ago don't copy paste from Word. _________________

They re-did usa jobs a few months ago.
If you're applying through usa jobs read the job listing carefully. Some want you to create a resume using usa jobs which is really just a:
Where you worked?
relevent KSA's?
done.
Some get more specific, they want you to use usa jobs resume but want you to put info into it that usa jobs doesn't ask for. That's crazy confusing and blows my mind. But whatever.
some want you to MAIL your resume in when you apply or upload a text version, but i don't think the fda is that budget. A few agencies still are. If uploading a resume remember that things like bullets and fancy formatting will not transfer. Read the uploading requirements carefully.
You've got a friend in the fda so direct all your questions to them as they'll know exactly what to do for that agency. They are all slightly different.
Your work experience will translate into a higher gs-grade and thus you should be ballin fists in no time.
then you can sleep with a principle. _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

eric was telling me that they list jobs before they have funding for them.
so you can end up applying for a possition and if funding doesn't arrive in time they pull the listing and re list it. This process can repeat itself for like 50 years and it's really annoying. I think the epa is currently doing this to me over and over again.
So if you do apply through an online thing and they have a questions survey that goes with the resume and a KSA write up, have a copy of that stuff, you might have to submit it 50 times.
but if yo friends hookn it up then no worries _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

yeah that's DEFinitely a practice they practice a lot
I'm not sure as much on the direct employment side, but for gov't contracting it's a huge thing. Sometimes they post jobs because they need resumes of people to put into a proposal to get funding, so they haven't even won the contract yet. They want you to sign on with them and say, "IF you guys WIN the contract, and it EVER gets funding through, THEN I'll quit whatever job I have at that time and come work for you"
Other times it's just, "Yeah, we'll have these jobs sometime between 3-12 months..."

Yeah - they do that for research jobs, but the FDA is a little different.
My friend works in the reproductive drug division - so basically she reviews bc, plan b, morning after, etc. They always need reviewers at the FDA, because regardless of what happens, new drugs are always coming through.
NIH works like you just said, Jimmy. That's how my current company hires, as well.
There's a whole long process to apply to the FDA - essays, and ish. My brain is seriously not working right now so I didn't even try - other than to look and see that I've been shafted out of $40,000 per year with my experience. _________________

yeah my epa application, not counting the resume part, had a 4 page essay, size 10 font.
it's annoying but i'd rather answer specific ksa's than write bs coverletters _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

Yeah. Sounds about right.
I have to devote some time this weekend to my public health mid-term and I'll most definately be writing some essays for job applications. Yay, just like college all over again. _________________

Do you guys mostly just do your resumes in the
Name / info
objective / position desired
education / certifications
work experience
summary of qualifications / whatever situational crap you need
as in a very general resume template? _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

Yes, that's what I use. I try to jazz up the formatting, though.
Also, don't use "my responsibilities include(d):" ever. It tends to sound less ambitious and more passive. Instead of "responsibilities", list "work and accomplishments" for each position. _________________ "I try not to think about my life. I have no life. I need therapy."

Yeah, the governments easy since they tell you exactly what they want and you can't jazz up any formatting because it wont carry over through the upload.
but i'm helping cdawg make a resume and it's been awhile since i did a normal one.

Yeah, that's what I use too.
And agreed on the no passive voice in job descriptions.
Keep simple sentence structure. Peoples resumes get so tangled. _________________ I live my life like I could die today, and want to make sure my toxocology report is an interesting read. |
