| Quote: | We've tossed around some pretty harsh criticisms of Ubisoft's new PC DRM approach, and it's very much deserved. Piracy is a tricky issue to combat, we get it, but we also know that no amount of DRM will ever stop the dedicated few kleptomaniacs who for one reason or another, simply refuse to pay for software. The only truth when it comes to copy protection is that the stronger it is, the more honest customers you will accidentally burn with it. This isn't anything we haven't said before, but it's ironic how all of our predictions seem to be coming true.
According to ZDnet a version of Assassin's Creed 2 sans DRM has appeared on Bit Torrents, and the date confirms it took a mere 24 hours to defuse Ubisoft's DRM of mass destruction. If this version works as advertised, it would leave the gimped version in the hands of paying customers who will needlessly be forced to suffer through another failed attempt at heavy handed copy protection. Its hard to gauge if all the bad press is having any impact on Assassin's Creed II's sales, but a quick peek at the Steam player stats ranks the game in 29th place, just below the original Day of Defeat (a game released 7 years ago).
The best way to vote against this type of behavior is with your wallet, not your Bit Torrent client, but perhaps the evolving reality of the situation will force Ubisoft to take action and release a patch for its loyal patrons. |

the ubi drm requires to to go through a bunch of activations
EVEN IF YOU BUY IT OFF STEAM
i know i'll never buy a game that has drm all over it like that.
sorry. if i buy a game i don't want to have to constantly prove that i bought it over and over again.
it's so funny, diablo and starcraft seemed to make tons of money without any drm...
dawn of war did as well...
i don't know how they do it, maybe it's just the fact that if you make a GOOD GAME people will buy it. Some will pirate, but many more will buy it. Piracy is not killing anyones profits. Your average 20-30 year old with disposable income is going to just plop 50 dollars down and play. Not download, mount iso, install, crack / copy files. IT's a pain in the ass.
Same with movies, if i really like something i'll buy the dvd's. IF I don't i'll download it, watch it once and throw it away. I'm not buying 9, even if i never pirated it, i wouldn't buy it.
just put out good content and stop wasting money on developing expensive drm tech that gets hacked in 1 day. you could of just sold assassin creed for like 10 dollars cheaper and sold a bunch of copies that way instead of blowing millions on drm developement.

and also we all know that tape players killed radio, vcr's killed movies/tv and cd's killed music and video games, and torrents are just slaughtering the profits of everyone out there....
or you know, someone gets smart and offers things like i tunes for 1 dollar and 99.99% of the population buys that.
then the RIAA or whatever struts around trying to sue the pants off of the other .01% that downloaded some music. But you know it's there right to sue a guy who downloaded 20 songs for 5 million dollars like i posted earlier.
yeah that's perfectly legal in this great country
you can also sue someone because you tripped over yourself and landed in a vat of lobsters. _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

yeah some of this does hurt
I know there was a huge fuss when Bio shock came out for the PC because of its DRM so people didn't buy it. Unfortunately this makes PC sales shitty and lead to companies deciding that PC sales/development is not worth while.
I know I never got the game because of that (even though there was a free version on the web with the DRM pulled out so it would not have been hard to play it for free).
If I pop out 50+ dollars or even 2 dollars for a game I don't want to have to deal with all of that nonsense.
There are games that have refused to use steam because it tracks so much more then it needs to. There are other digital distributors out there that are more polite to you, but steam is the big name so they lose a lot of money when they do it, but... _________________ How the hell does someone else have the name bob-n-slob.info |

yeah...
To me its not such a big deal anymore... 99% of games I play are multiplayer and authenticated against central servers...
Thus steam is my friend, and works like a charm.
If I bought something that made me jump through more hoops then just punching in a CD code I would be pissed... _________________ Steady as she goes. |

yeah and they limit your activations of the game.
so like you get 10 installs
and to get those 10 back, you have to go through some bullshi.t. that says "yeah i uninstalled it here look at my comp can i have an activation back please ubi soft?"
wtf is that man
and joes right the dumb ass publishers think it's just pc sales that are hurting right now.
then they look at blizzard and wonder why they suck dick _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |

that article didn't do a good job of explaining the problem.
I think CD keys are effective enough... Those that only want to play single player games probably as a whole aren't savvy enough to crack games _________________ When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose. |

Basically they need to use the 80/20 rule
with 20% effort into DRM they can stop 80% of pirates... and thats good enough! _________________ Steady as she goes. |

yup...
besides... at a certain point you just stop caring... I'm not going to pirate any game I actually care about playing...
Would I pirate something Sim City 5000 that I have an urge to play for 3 hours on afternoon? Sure....
But if I could would I rip off TF2 which I played for 100+ hours? Nope _________________ Steady as she goes. |

Yeah lets see how many times did i buy sc1, and d2?
drm is gay
cd key is okay
Look just have incentives to buy the game.
Authenticate the cd for new patches and free updates. Give people who buy the game little perks like access to user created content. Or just 10% off their next game purchase from said company. Or even a fucking cloth map does it for most people. Even an fps should have a cloth map showing all the sweet drop locations that most people wont know about when the games first out. It should detail neat strats in old english.

I don't even know what new battle net does. I do know i can't play bw without burning someones cd because the no cd patch requires a cd. _________________ I'll throw my hot dog down your hallway! |
